Henderson sees Liverpool past West Brom

Jordan Henderson's second-half goal ensured Liverpool ended their three-match winless run in the Premier League as they beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers's side have had a fitful opening to the campaign and were beaten 1-0 by Basel in the Champions League in midweek.

They took the lead just before half-time when the impressive Adam Lallana scored his first goal since joining from Southampton in a £25 million ($39.9 million, 31.9 million euros) move.

West Brom's England Under-21 striker Saido Berahino pulled the visitors level from the penalty spot shortly after the break, before Henderson gave Liverpool victory just after the hour.

Liverpool have registered only one clean sheet in their last 16 matches, but victory ahead of the international break will help to soothe nerves.

After a difficult week, Liverpool looked uncertain for much of the first half, with Rickie Lambert -- making his first league start after being drafted in for Mario Balotelli -- looking isolated in attack.

Steven Gerrard threatened from a couple of free kicks, but at the other end Craig Dawson missed with an overhead kick as the hosts once again struggled to deal with a set-piece.

Raheem Sterling caused problems with a fine run past two defenders, but his shot was blocked by a defender before Lallana's follow-up was pushed wide by West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Lambert finally got an opening when he latched on to a long ball from Martin Skrtel, but his effort was pushed away by Foster.

Berahino passed up two chances to open the scoring for the visitors, thumping one shot straight at Simon Mignolet from distance before heading wide after being picked out by Sebastien Pocognoli's cross from the left.

Stephane Sessegnon also had a drive from 25 yards held by Mignolet as the visitors pressed.

But Liverpool moved ahead in the final minute before half-time.

Lallana burst away from a posse of defenders and swapped passes with Henderson before hitting a low shot into the bottom-right corner with his left foot.

Nine minutes after the interval, West Brom were given the chance to draw level when Berahino went down under Dejan Lovren's ill-advised challenge on the edge of the area and referee Michael Oliver awarded a penalty.

Berahino converted from the spot to pull Alan Irvine's side back on terms with his fourth goal in three matches.

Liverpool's first attempt at a response saw Sterling find space down the right and pick out Lambert, only for the striker's shot on the turn to fly high and wide of goal.

The home side were soon appealing for a penalty of their own when Sterling went down in the area after being barged by Craig Gardner.

But Sterling got to his feet and pulled the ball back for Henderson to clip a shot into the bottom-left corner and restore Liverpool's lead.

As the home side searched for a killer third goal, Balotelli -- who replaced Lambert shortly after the goal -- curled a shot inches wide of goal from the edge of the area.

Sterling should have added a third when he surged on to Balotelli's chipped pass, but despite out-pacing Joleon Lescott, his touch was poor and the chance was missed.

Gerrard also had a firm strike held by Foster from Sterling's cross and Balotelli saw a low effort fielded by the goalkeeper as Liverpool began to dominate.

Berahino sliced a shot wide after being picked out by Sessegnon at the other end, but despite several anxious moments in the closing stages, Liverpool held on for a much-needed win.
