Chambers replaces injured Stones in England squad

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers was called into the England squad for next week's Euro 2016 qualifiers after John Stones withdrew because of an ankle injury sustained in Everton's 2-1 defeat by Manchester United.

Centre-back Stones suffered suspected ankle ligament damage late on in a Premier League loss at Old Trafford on Sunday that left the Merseysiders hovering above the relegation zone.

The Football Association confirmed later Sunday that Chambers would no longer be a member of England manager Roy Hodgson's squad for the matches against San Marino and Estonia, with Chambers promoted from the Under-21s.

"Following John Stones' injury this (Sunday) afternoon the player will not report to St George's Park for England duty tomorrow (Monday)," the FA said.

"England manager Roy Hodgson has subsequently called up Calum Chambers, who was previously due to report for the Under 21s team."

Stones, 20, left Old Trafford on crutches with a protective boot on his left leg and his absence from the squad for Thursday's match at home to San Marino and Saturday's away fixture against Estonia added to Hodgson's defensive woes, with Kyle Walker, Glen Johnson, Jon Flanagan, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones already ruled out of both fixtures.

Earlier, Everton manager Roberto Martinez told reporters: "John Stones has a problem with his ankle. It will be at least a few weeks (until he recovers)," Martinez told a post-match news conference.

"I don't expect John to be fit for next week. It is such a massive blow because he plays with an incredible arrogance. We will assess him in the next 48 hours."

United too had an injury scare when Chambers' former Southampton team-mate Luke Shaw went off with a knee injury in the second half, although the teenage full-back -- who has three senior caps -- is set to join up with the England Under-21 squad for their two-legged European Championship play-off against Croatia.

"It's not a bad injury," said Shaw.

"I felt it in the first 20 minutes when I got caught, but it carried on during the game so I thought it was probably best to come off before it gets any worse," the 19-year-old left-back added.

"I spoke with the doctor and obviously the manager as well, and both feel it's best that I do go (with the Under-21s) as it's not an injury that is going to keep me out."
