Assault victim Zaluska blameless says Celtic manager

Celtic manager Ronny Deila has spoken up in support of assault victim Lukasz Zaluska, saying the Hoops goalkeeper had suffered a "scary" experience

Zaluska sustained two black eyes following an incident in Glasgow's west end in the early hours of Monday morning.

The fact the Pole was out at that time did not sit well with Deila's call for Celtic players to be "24-hour athletes" but the Glasgow giants' manager insisted his keeper had done nothing wrong after being attacked in Ashton Lane -- the same place where former Hoops boss Neil Lennon was knocked unconscious in an attack in 2008.

"I have talked with Lukasz and I'm sorry for him because it could be quite scary. But in my opinion he has done nothing wrong," said Deila, speaking ahead of Celtic's Europa League clash with Romanian side Astra on Thursday.

"This is a police matter now and we just have to see what's happening.

"But he is fine now and he is ready for the game tomorrow, that's the most important thing. He has trained the last two days so that's very good. He was in the hospital and everything was fine."

Police are investigating the incident, but have refused to comment on reports that another Scottish Premiership player was involved in the attack.

For his part, Deila said: "I don't know what's behind it and I don't want to have any opinion about it either before I know what's happened. Now the police are on the scene and we will take it from there."

Zaluska himself said earlier he was unaware of the identity of his attacker.

Quoted in the Scottish Sun, the 32-year-old former Dundee United keeper said: "I had no idea who did it because I couldn't see their face. It was all over so quickly.

"I heard someone shouting something and then I was attacked from behind.

"I was punched on the head from behind and then hit the floor. I didn't see their faces."

The incident took a further twist when Dundee United defender Mark Wilson issued a statement saying he had tried to "calm a matter down" involving Zaluska in Ashton Lane.

Wilson, who played with the goalkeeper at Celtic, released a statement through a spokesperson, which read: "There has been a lot of publicity surrounding events on Sunday night in Ashton Lane.

"Mark Wilson would like to clarify matters regarding himself.

"Mark was out for a meal with his wife and some other couples.

"On his way home with his wife, they came across his friend and former team-mate Lukasz Zaluska.

"Mark tried to calm a matter down and latterly to help Lukasz as he was in a distressed situation."
