Gambian Scorpions sting Mauritania

Hosts Gambia edged Mauritania 1-0 Friday as a week of football friendlies involving African national teams reached the third day.

The Gambian Scorpions achieved victory at the Independence Stadium in Banjul via a first-half goal from defender Sam Pierre Mendy.

It was the second loss for France-born Mauritania coach Corentin Martins since replacing compatriot Patrice Neveu.

But he gets another chance to achieve his first victory in charge of Les Mourabitones when they play Niger Tuesday in Nouakchott.

Late goals from substitutes Shinji Okazaki and Keisuke Honda condemned Tunisia to a 2-0 defeat by Japan in Oita.

Belgium-born Tunisia coach George Leekens said: "Jet lag took its toll on us in the second half.

"You saw the quality Japan had in the players they brought off the bench. That turned the game."

Tunisia were playing their first match since a controversial 2015 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals loss to hosts Equatorial Guinea.

A hotly disputed penalty, which led to the Mauritian referee being banned for six months, earned the Equatoguineans a stoppage-time equaliser and they won 2-1 after extra time.

The Tunisian Carthage Eagles complete a tour of the Far East Tuesday with a match against China in Nanjing.
