UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Russia and Montenegro following incidents that forced a European Championship qualifier between the teams to be abandoned.

Friday's qualifier in Podgorica was called off halfway through the second period after a number of missiles had been thrown from the stands.

Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev had to be carried from the field on a stretcher and taken to hospital after being hit on the shoulder by a flare.

The game was held up for half an hour and delayed again at half-time due to crowd trouble.

It was finally abandoned when a melee broke out between rival players and benches following a penalty awarded to Russia, which was missed.

At that point another missile thrown from the crowd struck a Russian player and Turkish referee Deniz Aytekin decided enough was enough.

UEFA said Monday that disciplinary proceedings had been opened against both countries "for the setting off and throwing of fireworks and objects by their spectators".

Montenegro are also accused of "holding a match that did not get played in full".
