Ghana maintain trend of home Olympic wins

Ghana maintained a trend of home victories in 2016 Olympic Games football qualifiers in Africa by defeating Liberia 2-0 at the weekend.

Striker Dauda Mohammed scored in the first half and midfielder Kennedy Ashia in the second at the Tamale Stadium in northern Ghana.

Two other qualifiers also produced home wins with Botswana shocking Kenya 3-0 in Lobatse and Rwanda defeating Somalia 2-0 in Kigali.

Tamale will host the return match between the Ghanaian Black Meteors and the Liberian Satellites, too, because the Ebola epidemic prevents matches being staged in Monrovia.

Former bronze medalists Ghana face a long, difficult journey if they hope to make a seventh appearance at the Olympics football tournament.

Congo Brazzaville await the Meteors if they reach the second round, and the winners of that tie come up against Nigeria.

Whichever country survives go into an eight-nation tournament in Senegal during December and the top-three finishers represent Africa at the Rio Olympics.
