Champions Setif win to get back on track

Entente Setif snatched a 1-0 victory at Mouloudia El Eulma Sunday in an Algerian derby to keep alive hopes of winning a second successive CAF Champions League title.

El Hedi Belameiri, joint leading scorer in the competition last season with six goals, struck the matchday 2 winner two minutes into stoppage time.

Eulma star Walid Derrardja squandered a chance to equalise two minutes later at Stade Messaoud Zoughar, 336 kilometres (210 miles) east of capital city Algiers.

Both teams had a goal disallowed for offside before France-born Belameiri pounced to get the Setif Group B campaign back on track.

The 'Black Eagles' slumped 2-1 at home to fellow Algerians USM Alger two weeks ago and could not afford another loss.

USM defeated Sudanese visitors Al Merrikh 1-0 Saturday in the other group game and top the table with a maximum six points.

Merrikh and Setif have three points each with the Omdurman outfit second because of a superior goal difference.

Eulma, who were relegated to the Algerian second division last month, have lost both matches and appear out of the running for a top-two finish and a semi-finals place.

USM and Setif have home advantage over Eulma and Merrikh respectively in the matchday 3 fixtures this month.

Both Group A games are scheduled for late Sunday.

Sudanese Al Hilal host Egyptians Smouha and Moroccans Moghreb Tetouan host four-time champions TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
