Carpi make history as points shared in Verona derby

Brazilian Ryder Matos hit a second-half winner as newcomers Carpi claimed their first win in Serie A with a shock 2-1 defeat of Torino on Saturday.

In Saturday's late game, hosts Chievo fought back from a goal down to claim a share of the spoils from the city derby with Verona, which finished 1-1, to move up to fourth in the table.

Coming into the game with only two points to their account, Carpi were desperate for their first win in Italy's top flight and appointed Beppe Sannino as their new coach in midweek after sacking Fabrizio Castori.

Although the plaudits rained on the former Watford and Palermo coach Sannino, he and some of his players were quick to pay tribute to Castori, who in his first season in charge and with a one-year contract steered the Serie B champions into Italy's top flight at the first time of asking.

"I'd like us not to forget Fabrizio Castori, changing coach is always problematic but he is part of the history of this club," said Sannino.

Striker Marco Borriello, who joined the minnows after failing to impress at Roma, has been Carpi's stand-out player so far.

He told Sky Sport: "I want to say thanks to the coach (Castori) on behalf of the whole squad. It's thanks to him that we're in good condition physically.

"I don't want to say we dedicate the win to him, because it's a bit cheap. But we owe a lot of it to him, and we want him to know it."

The hosts found the breakthrough 10 minutes after the restart when Gabriel Silva's drive struck the near post and came back off Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli's shoulder for an own goal.

Matos doubled the hosts' lead in the 72nd minute when he nodded Borriello's cross past Padelli and although Maxi Lopez reduced arrears from the penalty spot three minutes later, Carpi held on to claim their a first win in Serie A.

It moved them off the foot of the table, leaving Verona as the only top flight team without a win after seven games.

Torino's strong start to the campaign had seen them move up to third place and only two points adrift of leaders Fiorentina.

But Giampiero Ventura's men are set to tumble down the standings after the remainder of the weekend's fixtures following a disappointing display at the Alberto Braglia stadium in Modena -- which is where Carpi are forced to play home games as their ground does not meet Serie A requirements.

Ventura lamented his side's lack of spirit: "I'm disappointed because we wanted to continue our good run of results, but the team I saw tonight just didn't show the same level of spirit as in our previous games.

Verona looked to be on their way to also claiming their first victory of the campaign after Eros Pisano put the visitors ahead on 70 minutes at the Bentegodi Stadium.

But Argentinian striker Lucas Castro secured a share of the spoils with an 83rd minute equaliser to hoist Rolando Maran's men up to provisional fourth place, just three points behind leaders Fiorentina.

Fiorentina sit ahead of Inter Milan on goal difference ahead of hosting Atalanta on Sunday, when Inter are away to Sampdoria.

Champions Juventus host Bologna looking for just their second win of the campaign in a bid to close their 10-point deficit, while AC Milan host Napoli in Sunday's late game.
