England's Harrison top pick as MLS eyes St. Louis

England's Jack Harrison was taken by Chicago with the first pick in Thursday's Major League Soccer SuperDraft, but the 19-year-old Bolton striker ended up with New York City FC.

New York City made a trade with the Fire for Harrison, sending money and fourth overall pick Brandon Vincent to Chicago during the event in suburban Baltimore.

Two weeks earlier, MLS denied New York's claim on Harrison as a homegrown player for his prep school time in Manhattan.

"We were going after Jack," NYC operations director Claudio Reyna said. "It was pretty obvious to us who was our priority number one."

Harrison, a freshman at Wake Forest University, will have the chance to work alongside City players David Villa, Andrea Pirlo and Frank Lampard. But he hopes a European return is in his future as well.

"It would be nice to go back to Europe and explore options there, but if I can, I'll try to prove myself in MLS first," Harrison said. "I'm just looking forward to see what it holds."

MLS commissioner Don Garber reaffirmed the league's backing of David Beckham's planned Miami franchise, still in the stadium site securing phase.

"They have finalized an opportunity to purchase land," Garber said. "We like the site. We think it would be good for an MLS team. But there's still work to do."

Garber said the departure of the NFL Rams from St. Louis could boost that city's bidders for a future MLS club.

"I think it gives a little more momentum to that city than before the Rams left," he said.
