Adelaide United finished top of the final Australian A-League standings after Brisbane Roar were held to a scoreless draw by Melbourne Victory on Saturday.

The Roar needed to beat the defending champions in Melbourne to take top spot off Adelaide but were denied by outstanding goalkeeping from Lawrence Thomas and a resilient Victory.

Victory, who made nine changes from their mid-week AFC Champions League draw with Suwon Bluewings in South Korea, played above themselves to frustrate the Roar.

Thomas, a hero in Victory's 1-1 draw in South Korea mid-week, made an outstanding reflex save to deny James Donachie in stoppage time, following up fine efforts to keep out Jamie Maclaren and Brazilian super sub Henrique.

Adelaide, coached by Barcelona great Guillermo Amor, climaxed an incredible season to finish top after 27 regular rounds fighting their way off the bottom of the competition, winless after eight rounds.

The Reds beat Melbourne City 2-0 in Melbourne on Friday to leapfrog Brisbane Roar into the top spot.

Western Sydney Wanderers can knock Brisbane out of second spot if they can beat Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on Sunday.
