Bolton were relegated from the Championship after a 4-1 defeat against Derby, while second tier leaders Burnley took another step towards the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Leeds on Saturday.

Rock bottom Bolton were already almost certain to slip into League One for the first time since 1993 and their fate was sealed at the iPro Stadium.

Johnny Russell gave the fifth-placed Rams an early lead and Tom Ince doubled the advantage before half-time.

Jacob Butterfield added a third from long-range midway through the second half before Zach Clough pulled one back from the penalty spot.

Russell grabbed his second and Derby's fourth as Bolton went down with a whimper.

"This has just confirmed the sort of season the club's had," Bolton caretaker boss Jimmy Phillips said.

"The only positive thing we can say is that we still have a football club because at one stage during the season that was looking very doubtful."

Scott Arfield struck after just 59 seconds to ensure Burnley stayed top of the table after beating Leeds at Turf Moor, with the visitors made to pay for Chris Wood spurning two glorious second-half opportunities.

"You can't use the word 'luck' when you're top of the league with 80 points at this stage of the season," Burnley manager Sean Dyche said of his team's narrow win.

"That's not about luck when you've gone this far down the line. It's about all the different challenges and dealing with them over a season. There's still more work to be done."

Second placed Middlesbrough also boosted their automatic promotion hopes with a 1-0 win at home to Preston to lift them four points clear of third placed Brighton, who travel to Nottingham Forest on Monday.

Hull remain fourth thanks to a stoppage-time equaliser from Adama Diomande in a 2-2 draw at Huddersfield.

Sheffield Wednesday dropped to sixth after a 4-1 defeat at Bristol City, but play-off hopefuls Cardiff and Ipswich could not take advantage as they were beaten.

Ipswich were already trailing to a Sam Saunders goal when they had Luke Hyam sent off in first-half stoppage time for his reaction to a late challenge from Ryan Woods.

Lasse Vibe's second-half double then sealed Brentford's 3-1 win, with Liam Feeney's late goal little consolation for Ipswich.

Cardiff slipped to a 2-1 loss at Fulham despite taking the lead through a Lex Immers header.

Scott Parker levelled at the start of the second half and Emerson Hyndman's late goal for the Cottagers eased their relegation fears.

Rotherham continued their revival under Neil Warnock with a 4-0 victory in a crucial clash at struggling Milton Keynes Dons.

Matt Derbyshire put the Millers ahead after just 54 seconds before a Leon Best penalty, a Kirk Broadfoot header and a Richie Smallwood stunner left the Dons nine points from safety with five matches to go.

Charlton are also running out of time to save themselves after slipping to a 2-1 defeat at QPR.
