Goal hero Pique hails perfect Spain start

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique underlined the importance of a good start to Spain's bid to win a third consecutive European Championship after heading home a late winner to beat the Czech Republic 1-0 on Monday.

Spain looked set to be frustrated by the dogged Czechs as they dominated throughout, but could not find a way past inspired Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech.

However, Pique was the unlikely hero, as the player often booed by Spain fans this season due to perceived anti-Real Madrid comments rose highest to turn home Andres Iniesta's cross at the back post three minutes from time.

"It is very important to start well," said Pique.

"We played well, controlled the game, created chances, but the ball didn't want to go in.

"In the end I had the luck to score the goal."

Spain, who are looking to make amends for their disastrous showing as holders at the World Cup two years ago, continue their campaign against Turkey on Friday.
