Sammer leaves post as Bayern sporting director

Former Germany international Matthias Sammer has left his position as Bayern Munich's sporting director following a health scare earlier this year, the club announced on Sunday.

Sammer, 48, suffered a blood circulation problem in his brain in April and has since regained full health, but said he no longer had the desire to continue in his role.

"Being FC Bayern's sporting director means I have to be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day with all my energy, for the club, the team and also the public. I don't want to take on these tasks at the moment," Sammer said in a statement.

Sammer had two years left on his contract with Bayern, who won a record four successive Bundesliga titles as well as the 2013 Champions League following his appointment in 2012.

His departure comes just a day before Carlo Ancelotti is due to hold his first training session with Bayern after the Italian was hired to replace Pep Guardiola.
