Bristol City on the rise after Boro win

Bristol City moved into third place in English football's second-tier Championship following a 2-1 win at home to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Goals from Joe Bryan and Jamie Paterson in the space of three second-half minutes saw the southwest side to victory, with Hordur Magnusson's own-goal scant consolation for a Boro side who have now lost three of their last four games.

City's fifth win in seven Championship matches left manager Lee Johnson's side six points off the top two automatic promotion places.

Second-placed Cardiff won 3-1 at home to Norwich on Friday while leaders Wolves are not in action again until they travel to Birmingham on Monday.

At the other end of the division, Gary Nadine scored twice as Bolton moved off the bottom of the table with a 3-1 win at home to Barnsley.

The striker put Bolton ahead in the 20th minute only for Barnsley to equalise with a penalty soon afterwards.

But Bolton scored a penalty of their own through Nadine to go 2-1 up before the break and Mark Little's superb solo goal put the result beyond doubt.

Nigel Clough's Burton Albion side dropped to the bottom following a 1-0 defeat at Derby County -- the club where his father Brian made his name as a manager.

Meanwhile former Wales boss Chris Coleman suffered his first defeat in charge of Sunderland as visitors Reading won 3-1 at the Stadium of Light.

Callum McManaman went from from hero to villain for Sunderland in a matter of seconds on the stroke of half-time.

He bundled the ball over the line for what appeared to be the opening goal only to be sent off for a second bookable offence for scoring with his hand.

Dave Edwards put Reading ahead early in the second half before Mo Barrow doubled the Royals' lead with a 68th-minute volley finish.

Not long later, Barrow made it 3-0 before Lewis Grabban pulled a goal back for Sunderland.

Elsewhere, Sheffield United failed to close on the top two as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Millwall.

South London side Millwall went ahead when Lee Gregory finished from a fast counter-attack before a superb volley from David Brooks drew the Blades level.

But Mahlon Romeo made it 2-1 to Millwall and Jake Cooper put the result beyond doubt with three minutes remaining.
