McGree's wonder 'Scorpion' goal lifts Jets into A-League decider

A stunning "scorpion" goal from youngster Riley McGree lifted the Newcastle Jets into their first Australian A-League Grand Final in 10 years on Friday.

McGree, 19, on loan from Belgium's Club Brugge, scored the equaliser with an audacious flick from behind his body to inspire the Jets to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Melbourne City in a gripping semi-final.

Newcastle, wooden spooners last season, got the winner through Jay Hoffman in the 75th minute and will face either defending champions Sydney FC or Melbourne Victory in next week's season decider.

Uruguayan striker Bruno Fornaroli forced in an own goal off Nikolai Topor-Stanley in the 14th minute to put City ahead.

But the Jets, urged on by their roaring 19,000 home fans, surged home in the second half with McGree's wonder goal and Hoffman's winner to give themselves a shot at the title after last reaching the A-League Grand Final in 2008.

The Jets, rejuvenated this season under the coaching of Ernie Merrick, can still host this season's decider if Premiership Plate winners Sydney FC lose to Melbourne Victory in Sydney on Saturday.
