Xhaka hurts knee in Swiss World Cup training

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka hurt a knee on Thursday during a team training session in Lugano and was undergoing tests the Swiss football federation said.

During a session in "pouring rain", the 25-year-old "was apparently injured in the left knee while competing for the ball," the federation web site reported.

It went on to say that team doctor Pierre-Etienne Fournier had reported that the Xhaka was suffering "a pain on the outside of his left knee."

The federation said that Xhaka, who has been capped 61 times, would be examined further and might be sent for an MRI scan.

Switzerland play warm-up games against Spain on Sunday and Japan next Friday. They open their campaign in Group E against Brazil in Rostov on June 17 and then face Costa Rica and Serbia.
