Leaders Zenit wary of Anzhi banana skin

Russian Premier League table-toppers Zenit St Petersburg are wary of a potential banana skin when they travel to strugglers Anzhi Makhachkala at the weekend.

The unbeaten Saint Petersburg club have a six-point lead at the top of the league ahead of second-placed Krasnodar, who host Dynamo Moscow. Rostov and Spartak, who share third spot, both one point further back, go head-to-head in Moscow.

Zenit, who have netted 12 goals in their last four matches in all competitions, look clear favourites to bag all three points in the meeting with Anzhi, who sit third from bottom, but manager Sergei Semak warned against complacency.

"We shouldn't take Anzhi lightly," Semak said. "They're on the up after beating Dynamo in Moscow last week. And I expect them to perform at their best against the league leaders in front of their home crowd.

"Last week we led 4-1 but lost concentration, allowing Lokomotiv to claw back in. Luckily everything ended well but we should never repeat that mistake. It may become too costly against the other opponents."

Krasnodar head coach Oleg Fomenko said he was delighted with his side's current three-match winning streak.

"We've looked really good," Fomenko said. "And I'm happy that my team played disciplined football even when we led by three or four goals.

"But we should be very careful against Dynamo, who will come to Krasnodar angered by last week's 1-0 home defeat by Anzhi."

Spartak Moscow boss Massimo Carrera was also satisfied with his team in last week's ferocious derby with CSKA, which ended in a 1-1 draw, adding he would like to see the same degree of commitment against Rostov.

"They demonstrated excellent motivation and a great mindset," Carrera said.

"Now we need nothing less than the win against Rostov. It's a very important game for us."

On the contrary Rostov head coach Valery Karpin, who coached Spartak between 2009-14, was left bitterly disappointed by their goalless draw with lowly Ufa.

"It will be tough to play against Spartak on their home turf and we will need to show some strong character and skills in Moscow to obtain a positive result there."
