Bundesliga strugglers name Weinzierl as new coach

The Bundesliga's bottom club VfB Stuttgart appointed former Schalke 04 coach Markus Weinzierl on Tuesday and gave him the task of trying to keep them in the top flight.

Stuttgart sacked Tayfun Korkut at the weekend after taking just five points from seven league games.

Weinzierl, 43, has been without a club since Schalke sacked him in June 2017 after a single season in charge.

"The VfB is a big club which currently finds itself in a difficult position," Weinzierl said.

"But I am convinced that the team and the club have great potential."

Stuttgart, who count France's World Cup-winning defender Benjamin Pavard among their ranks, finished seventh in the Bundesliga last year in their first season back after winning promotion from the second division.
