Derby County produced a storming comeback in front of new manager Steve McClaren to claim an improbable 4-4 draw against Ipswich Town in the second-tier English Championship on Tuesday.

McClaren was appointed as the successor to the sacked Nigel Clough on Monday and the former England coach watched from the stands at Pride Park, with academy manager Darren Wassall taking charge of the team.

In a torrid first half, the hosts conceded goals by Christophe Berra, Daryl Murphy, Aaron Cresswell and Ryan Tunnicliffe, with a goal from new Derby signing Zak Whitbread the only sign of resistance.

However, after McClaren visited the changing room at half-time, goals from Craig Bryson and Jamie Ward whittled away the deficit before Bryson struck again two minutes from the end to rescue a remarkable point.

The draw left Derby in 14th place in the table, seven points below the play-off places.

With former leaders Queens Park Rangers not in action, Burnley won 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers to take over from the London club at the top of the table on goal difference.

Sam Vokes opened the scoring with a penalty shortly before half-time after being fouled by Rob Jones, who completed the scoring with an own goal in the 87th minute.

Leicester City also have 23 points and sit in third place after beating Yeovil Town 2-1 through goals from Lloyd Dyer and David Nugent.

Nottingham Forest are four points below the leading trio in fourth place after a 1-1 draw at Charlton, while fifth-place Reading were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom club Barnsley at Oakwell.

Bolton Wanderers remained in the bottom three following a 0-0 draw with Blackpool.

Sheffield Wednesday are above the relegation zone on goal difference, but they would have moved higher had Keith Andrews not scored a last-minute equaliser to earn Brighton and Hove Albion a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium.

Birmingham City crushed Millwall 4-0, with Manchester United loanee Jesse Lingard missing an early penalty but getting on the score-sheet in the 89th minute.

Ross McCormack also missed a penalty and scored, in Leeds United's 2-1 win over Bournemouth, while Blackburn Rovers beat Watford 1-0 and Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Huddersfield Town.
