Celtic bounced back from their midweek European elimination to book their place in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup with a record-equalling 7-0 defeat of Hearts at Tynecatle.

The Hoops scored five in a blistering first half display as they took their disappointment of exiting Europe out on the Jambos.

Kris Commons got the scoring started early with a third minute strike before grabbing a second in the 21st minute.

Celtic Scott Brown tapped in the third before Joe Ledley finished off a good move to make it 4-0 and Mikel Lustig's superb long range strike completed the first half scoring.

The Hoops inevitably eased up in the second half but there was still time for Commons to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot before Brown's deflected shot sealed a 7-0 win that was the perfect way to answer their critics as manager Neil Lennon celebrated his 200th game in charge.

The result equals Hearts worst ever defeat which came against Edinburgh rivals Hibernian on New Year's Day in 1973 and heaps more misery on the administration-stricken club who languish at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.

It sets up the possibility of an Old Firm derby in the next round after Glasgow rivals Rangers defeated Falkirk 2-0 on Saturday to also reach the last 16.

Celtic set the tone for the match from the start as Commons fired them into a third minute lead. A great passing move saw Joe Ledley play in the former Scotland international who took a touch before sending an angled shot beyond McDonald.

The second came in the 21st minute when Charlie Mulgrew's quickly-taken free kick released Commons down the right and lifted his fierce strike over the despairing keeper.

Commons came close to claiming his hat-trick minutes later when he clipped a shot that looked like it was going to dip under the bar but McDonald just managed to tip it over the bar.

Hearts looked like they were chasing shadows at times and found themselves three behind in the 34th minute. Stokes picked out Ledley in the box and the Welsh midfielder's shot smashed off the base of the post but Brown reacted quickest to tap in the rebound.

It was all one-traffic and Celtic inevitably grabbed their fourth in the 42nd minute when Ledley got on the end of a perfect ball across the six-yard box by Lustig to tuck the ball past McDonald.

The best of the bunch came two minutes later when Lustig galloped forward and fired a superb shot off the underside of the bar and in from 25 yards out.

Commons sealed his hat-trick with a 59th minute penalty. Commons earned the kick himself after the forward's attempted pass came off the arm of Wilson and he stepped up to drill the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

McDonald made a good save to deny substitute Teemu Pukki but moments later the Hearts keeper was left helpless as Anthony Stokes' cross was headed clear only as far as Brown who lashed a left-shot home from 18 yards via a slight deflection.

Celtic will be joined in Monday's draw for the last 16 by Aberdeen, who earlier in the day defeated fellow Premiership side Partick Thistle 1-0 thanks to a fifth minute goal from Andrew Considine.
