Two-time men's European figure skating champion Javier Fernandez will be Spain's flag bearer at the Sochi Winter Olympic games next month, the Spanish Olympic Committee announced on Tuesday.

"It is a huge honour to be the flag bearer at the Sochi Olympics," said 22-year-old Fernandez, who is currently training in Canada, in a video after learning of the news.

Fernandez, who retained his European title in Budapest on Saturday, is the principal medal hope amongst the team of 21 Spanish athletes who will travel to take part in the games.

Fernandez, who won bronze at last year's world championships, said after successfully defending his title that he sometimes feels like an Eskimo playing volleyball as he tries to get a look-in in football-mad Spain.
