Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers revealed on Friday that he is close to agreeing a new contract with the Premier League title contenders.

"I've obviously been in discussions with the club and there is the framework of a deal that is in place," he told a press conference on Friday.

"But I have always said it will be at the end of the season. I want nothing to detract from what has been a great season for ourselves. Hopefully we will resolve it over the course of the off-season."

Following a 2-0 loss at home to Chelsea and a 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace, Liverpool go into their final game of the campaign at home to Newcastle United on Sunday with only an outside chance of claiming the title.

Leaders Manchester City need only a point from their home fixture against West Ham United to secure a second title in three years, but if they lose and Liverpool win, Rodgers's men will be the champions.

Liverpool will be able to call upon Jordan Henderson after the England midfielder completed a three-game suspension for his dismissal during the 3-2 win at home to City last month.

With long-term knee injury victim Jose Enrique Liverpool's only absentee, Rodgers will have a virtually full-strength squad to choose from.

Rodgers described British media reports linking him with Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana as "purely speculation", although he did express admiration for the England international.

"I saw something on that on Thursday. I'm sure you can respect that I would never, ever mention a player at another club," he said.

"It is purely speculation. Adam is a terrific young talent, but for us, there is always speculation about top young players."
