Victor Fernandez was named as coach of promoted Spanish top flight side Deportivo La Coruna on Thursday, just two days after Fernando Vazquez was sacked for criticising the club's transfer policy.

Fernandez brings a wealth of experience to his new role having coached Real Zaragoza to the 1994 Spanish Cup as well as enjoying spells with Tenerife, Celta Vigo and Real Betis in Spain as well as Porto in Portugal and Ghent in Belgium.

Vazquez, 59, had expressed his dissatisfaction with the club's recent transfer dealings after leading them back to the top flight in his first full season in charge.

Deportivo La Coruna won promotion after being relegated in 2013, and Vazquez renewed his contract last June until 2016.

The team from Galicia won their only Spanish title in 2000 and reached the 2004 Champions League semi-finals.

The new Spanish season gets underway on August 23.
