Real recruit Alonso starts for Bayern

Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso was on Saturday handed his first start at Bayern Munich just a day after completing his move to the German champions.

Alonso, 32, only finalised his transfer from Real Madrid on Friday morning but Bayern boss Pep Guardiola threw him straight into the starting line-up for Bayern's Bundesliga match at Schalke on Saturday evening.

The former Liverpool player, who retired from international football after the World Cup, has signed a two-year deal with the Bavarian giants.

Moroccan defender Mehdi Benatia, who also joined Bayern in a big-money move from Roma this week, was not included in the Bayern squad for Saturday's game.
