Fairytale final beckons for Aussie debutants

Australian debutants Western Sydney Wanderers will try to extend their fairytale run all the way to the AFC Champions League final when they host FC Seoul in the second leg of a finely balanced semi-final on Wednesday.

Seven wins out of the last nine have made Tony Popovic's team this year's surprise package, crowned by their shock ousting of defending champions Guangzhou Evergrande in the quarter-finals.

Now the A-League side, formed just two years ago, have home advantage as they bid to become only Australia's second team to reach the final after Adelaide United were runners-up in 2008.

The Wanderers underlined their durability when they gutted out a 0-0 draw with Seoul in the semi-final first leg despite missing key players Shannon Cole, Tomi Juric and Brendon Santalab through suspension.

While that was their first draw in the Champions League, it was the third consecutive goalless stalemate in the competition for FC Seoul, who needed a penalty shootout to get past Pohang Steelers in the quarter-finals.

Beaten on away goals by Guangzhou in last year's final, FC Seoul have the chance to become the first team since Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia in 2005 to qualify for consecutive finals.

This success comes despite lacking a real cutting edge up front this season following the departure of Montengrin striker Dejan Damjanovic at the end of last year.

Their strength is now in defence with goalkeeper Yu Sang-hun keeping three consecutive clean sheets and stopping all three penalties he faced in the shootout against Pohang.

While there is all to play for in the Eastern semi-final, Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal have a firm grip on their Western semi against Al Ain after a brace by Nassir Al Shamrani helped them trounce the UAE club 3-0 in the first leg.

Al Hilal, two-time winners of the Asian Club Championship in 1991 and 2000, now look odds-on to contest the two-legged final barring a remarkable comeback by the Emirati side.
