Canada's Akindele wins MLS top rookie award

Tesho Akindele, a Canadian-born forward for FC Dallas, was named Major League Soccer's Rookie of the Year on Monday after scoring seven goals and setting up three more over 26 matches.

Born to a Nigerian father and Canadian mother in Calgary, he moved to America with his family at age eight and holds a US green card.

Akindele played for a Canadian junior team in a 2009 friendly but rejected a call to join Canada's national team earlier this month, saying he remains undecided about trying to play internationally for the United States or Canada.

"I don't know what the future might hold," Akindele said. "I've talked to both the US and Canada camps. I guess we will see what happens."

After an injury sidelined Argentine striker Mauro Diaz, Akindele netted six goals in six games for Dallas from early July to mid-August, including a hat trick at San Jose on August 16.

"It has been a fantastic year," Akindele said. "I couldn't be happier."

Akindele helped Dallas reach the MLS playoffs for the first time since 2011 and scored a goal in a 2-1 playoff victory over Vancouver in the opening round of the playoffs.
