South Korea striker Son Heung-Min is hoping to add to his impressive goal tally on Wednesday against Monaco to fire Bayer Leverkusen into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Son netted both Leverkusen's goals in their 2-1 win at Zenit St Petersburg three weeks ago to put Bayer top of Group C and four-points clear of second-placed Monaco.

The 22-year-old has netted three goals in four Champions League games this season having also netted in the 3-1 home win over Benfica to claim 11 goals in all competitions.

A point against Monaco at the BayArena will put Leverkusen in the last 16 for the second year running, but their aim is to finish in top spot.

Son says they want to have their passage confirmed against Monaco to avenge their 1-0 opening round away defeat before the final group match at Benfica in a fortnight.

"We definitely want to beat Monaco at home and not have to explain why we lost to them twice," Son told the BayArena magazine.

"The game will be very intense and we want to fight for 90 minutes.

"We're really motivated and we want to settle a score with Monaco.

"We want to fight for every point to make sure we finish first in the group."

The German side have won all three games since losing at Monaco, defeating Zenit Saint Petersburg both home (2-0) and away (2-1), while bottom side Benfica were also beaten 3-1 at the BayArena.

Son is relishing playing under Roger Schmidt this season and is benefiting from the new Leverkusen brand of attacking football, which has seen them go fourth in the Bundesliga.

"We have put in some good performances and have collected a lot of self confidence on the international stage in the process," he said.

"We're playing very offensively now and that does you a lot of good as a forward.

"It means we're often playing in front of the opponents' goal, so a lot rests on me."

Having been voted into the Champions League team for two of the four rounds so far, Son said the secret is focussing always on his next performance.

"When I was small, I always looked at stuff like that, but now I know that the goal-scorers are often under the media spotlight," he said.

"But the success of those up front always depends on the whole team.

"I just want to do my best for the team, the rest will then take care of itself."

Leverkusen have been humiliated in the last 16 of the Champions League in the recent past after being crushed 4-0 at home by Paris St Germain last season, ultimately losing 6-1 on aggregate.

In 2012, they were drubbed 10-2 on aggregate having suffered a club record 7-1 hammering at Barcelona when Lionel Messi scored five goals.

Son says it is important for them to finish as group winners to avoid a big name in the last 16.

"Of course, it would help to finish first in the group to make sure we only come across the top teams in Europe a bit further on," he said.

"I'd like to see us get a good, but beatable opponent in the last 16, but it doesn't matter who comes, we'd just want to reach the quarter-finals, so I don't have a particular team in my head."
