Melbourne City break home drought

Melbourne City ended an eight-month home A-League drought with a 1-0 win over defending champions Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

The Manchester City-owned club won through an Aaron Mooy penalty to displace Brisbane in the competition's top six.

Leaders Perth Glory extended their best start to an A-League season with a 2-1 late defeat of Sydney FC in Sydney.

The Glory struck twice in the final eight minutes on Thursday, having trailed to a controversial Shane Smeltz penalty midway through the second half to inflict a first defeat of Graham Arnold's reign.

Kenny Lowe's side stayed top of the table with Rostyn Griffiths heading home a free-kick and Irishman Andy Keogh converting from the penalty spot.

Perth have just one grand final appearance to show in 10 A-League seasons that have largely been dogged by mediocrity, but now boast seven wins from their first nine games of this campaign.

Melbourne Victory underlined their title credentials with a 3-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners at North Sydney Oval.

Three goals in 11 minutes in the second half sealed the points.

Besart Berisha opened the scoring in the 61st minute with Daniel Georgievski adding the second and substitute Connor Pain a third to preserve Victory's unbeaten record and move to second spot.

Argentine ace Marcelo Carrusca and his Adelaide United teammates toyed with Western Sydney in a 2-0 win to leave the Wanderers' domestic campaign in tatters.

Carrusca scored one goal and set up Fabio Ferreira for the other in Adelaide's stylish victory.

Asian champions Western Sydney, winless from nine league games this season, left on Sunday for Morocco ahead of a December 14 date with Mexico's Cruz Azul in the World Club Challenge.

Wellington Phoenix came from behind with three goals in five minutes to defeat Newcastle Jets 3-1 and extend the Jets' win-less start to the season to nine games at Hunter Stadium.

The Jets led early before their former teammate Nathan Burns rounded goalkeeper Ben Kennedy to equalise in the 73rd minute.

A minute later, an unmarked Michael McGlinchey tapped home and the stunning turnaround was complete in the 78th minute when Fiji international Roy Krishna cannoned a stunning strike from the edge of the area into the top-left corner of the goal.

Wellington's win was their fifth in nine games, while the loss was Newcastle's fifth and left them languishing on four points with only the Wanderers below them on the standings.
