Mourinho springs surprise with Cahill selection

Jose Mourinho sprang a surprise as he selected defender Gary Cahill to replace suspended midfielder Nemanja Matic in Chelsea's team for the League Cup final against Tottenham on Sunday.

With Matic banned after his controversial dismissal against Burnley last weekend, Blues boss Mourinho opted to bring in England international Cahill for the Wembley showpiece instead of a recognised midfielder.

That prompted questions about whether he would play Cahill in a defensive holding midfield role or as one of three centre backs alongside John Terry and Kurt Zouma, who were also included in a Chelsea line-up featuring five changes from the side held by Burnley.

Petr Cech started in goal ahead of Thibaut Courtois, while Cesar Azpilicueta, Ramires and Willian also came in.

For Tottenham, France international Hugo Lloris was named in goal ahead of Michel Vorm, who had played every minute of this season's competition.

Harry Kane led the Tottenham attack as the in-form striker looked to add to his 24-goal haul this season, which included two in a 5-3 win over Chelsea on New Year's day.

In total, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino made six changes from the team that lost 2-0 to Fiorentina in the Europa League on Thursday, with Kane, Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Ryan Mason and Nacer Chadli returning.
