Kaizer Chiefs regain form to thrash Swallows

Leaders Kaizer Chiefs clicked in the South African Premiership for the first time since a mid-season break to trounce Moroka Swallows 3-0 Wednesday in wet Soweto.

After one win, two draws and two losses, Chiefs finally recaptured the form that created a 15-point Premiership lead at the halfway stage.

While the convincing victory at a rain-lashed Dobsonville Stadium kept them eight points ahead of second-place Mamelodi Sundowns, Swallows' woes continued.

The once-mighty Soweto outfit are second last, only five points above AmaZulu having played one game more.

Coach Fani Madida, who recently boasted that his ability was equal to that of Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, announced he was quitting during a Monday night radio show.

Swallows, who have won just six of 24 league games, are using former All Blacks rugby coach John Mitchell to boost motivation and concentration.

Mitchell has been based in South Africa for several years and previously coached the Johannesburg Golden Lions Super 15 squad.

Swallows caretaker coach Goodman Mazibuko was hoarse by the end of his Premiership debut, but the verbal prompts fell on deaf ears as Chiefs displayed a clinical edge often missing recently.

A Larry Cohen own-goal midway through the opening half broke the deadlock and late goals from George Lebese and Bernard Parker confirmed the superiority of the visitors.

Sundowns, who have a game in hand over Chiefs and host them late April, triumphed 3-0 against bottom-half Chippa United in Pretoria.

Mbuyiselo Sambu conceded an own goal after four minutes, Teko Modise converted an early second-half penalty and Rodney Ramagalela completed the rout.

Orlando Pirates stayed third -- 11 points adrift of arch-rivals Chiefs -- after an unimpressive 2-1 home win over Mpumalanga Black Aces in Soweto with Thabo Rakhale scoring the crucial second goal.
