Darmstadt back in Bundesliga, Karlsruhe in play-off

Darmstadt will be back in the Bundesliga next season for the first time in 33 years after winning promotion on Sunday with their 1-0 home win over St Pauli.

A direct second-half free-kick by midfielder Tobias Kempe fired Darmstadt back into Germany's top flight for the first time since 1982.

They finished second in the table behind champions Ingolstadt as the two sides promoted from the second division.

It is Darmstadt's second promotion in successive seasons under coach Dirk Schuster.

Karlsruhe finished third in the second division after their 1-1 draw at home to Ingolstadt on Sunday which means they will face Hamburg, who finished third from bottom in the Bundesliga, in a two-legged relegation play-off.

Hamburg, whose coach Bruno Labbadia will be up against his former club, host Karlsruhe this Thursday in the first-leg with the return on June 1.
