Oops! Sweden gets the clap, in translation snafu

A promotional video for the Swedish women's football team has triggered giggles and smirks after its slogan translated into English was revealed Tuesday as "Clap for Sweden".

The clap is slang in English for the venereal disease gonorrhea.

"This kind of thing happens, we have chosen to smile a little at the translation and instead rejoice over the fact that it has given the national squad so much attention," the Swedish Football Federation's spokesman Niklas Bodell told news agency TT.

The video, part of a campaign launched ahead of the women's World Cup which opens in Canada on June 6, features the hashtags "#klappaforsverige" and "#clapforsweden".

The translation blunder quickly went viral on Swedish social media sites.

One Twitter user with the handle @nvlk21 wrote "More gonorrhea for the people!", while another, @LarsSund1, wrote "Swedes think they master the English language. They don't."
