Former Socceroo John Aloisi has been appointed as new coach of A-League side Brisbane Roar, with his first assignment against Liverpool in July.

It is his first senior role since being sacked as coach of the then Melbourne Heart -- now Melbourne City -- in December 2013.

"I am extremely proud and honoured to join Brisbane Roar," said Aloisi, who made 55 appearances for Australia, scoring 27 goals, and who takes over from the departing Mike Mulvey.

"The club has defined success in the first 10 years of the A-League and I am determined to ensure the high standards the Roar players, members, sponsors and supporters have come to expect continue under my stewardship."

His first game will be a glamour friendly against Liverpool in Brisbane on July 17, the club said in a statement late Tuesday.

Caretaker coach Frans Thijssen is expected to stay in the role until Aloisi officially takes over, including for their clash with Spanish La Liga side Villarreal on June 3.
