US national team to host mighty Brazil

The United States men's national soccer team will host five-time World Cup champion Brazil in an international friendly on September 8 at Gillette Stadium, United States Soccer announced on Thursday.

"This is just a great match for fans of the US and fans of Brazil and soccer fans in general," said Brian Bilello, who is president of Major League Soccer's New England Revolution.

The Americans will use the friendly in Foxborough, Massachusetts as a tune-up for a playoff match against either Mexico or Jamaica to determine who will advance to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

The United States was relegated to the Confederations Cup playoff after being eliminated from the Gold Cup tournament on Wednesday following a 2-1 loss to Jamaica.

The United States has lost 16 of 17 matches all-time against Brazil. It will be the first contest between the two since Brazil beat the Americans 4-1 three years ago in Maryland.
