West Brom sign Hull defender Chester

West Bromwich Albion signed Hull City defender James Chester in a deal worth up to £8 million ($12.5 million), the Premier League club announced on Wednesday.

Wales international Chester, a product of Manchester United's youth academy, agreed a four-year contract at The Hawthorns after completing a medical earlier in the week.

Albion will only pay Championship club Hull the full £8 million if all the contract clauses related to the centre-back's performances and the team's success are triggered.

"James did very well for Hull City. I've had a good chat with him and he's the type of player I like," Albion manager Tony Pulis told the club's website.

"He's young, a strong character, a good defender, he has good feet and he has the Manchester United stamp all over him, just like (Stoke's) Ryan Shawcross and (West Brom's) Darren Fletcher. They're wonderful lads and I'm told James is as well.

"(Hull manager) Steve (Bruce) gave him a great mention and there is no better accolade than Steve Bruce giving a defender a good drum roll."

Chester, 26, made 171 appearances for Hull after signing from Manchester United in 2011, but couldn't stop the Tigers being relegated from the Premier League last season.
