Juventus have bolstered their depleted midfield following the departure of Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal by signing Hernanes from Inter Milan and upcoming Frenchman Mario Lemina from Marseille.

Hernanes, known for his great ball control and play-making skills, signed a three-year deal worth 11m euros ($12.4million, £8million) to become Juve's second signing on the final day of the summer transfer period after France under-21 midfielder Lemina, who joins on a season-long loan deal.

A statement on Hernanes said: "Juventus Football Club can confirm that an agreement has been reached with Inter Milan for the purchase of Anderson Hernanes for a fee of EUR11 million, payable in three financial years.

"The deal may increase by a further EUR2 million should certain sporting targets stipulated in the agreement be achieved before 30 June 2018.

"The player has signed a three-year contract with the club."

After beginning his career with Sao Paulo in Brazil, Hernanes rose to prominence in Italy while playing for Lazio, scoring 33 goals in 118 appearances.

Hernanes was in tears when he left Lazio for Inter Milan after complicated negotiations between the clubs in January 2014, but signed a four and a half deal with the Nerazzurri.

Despite some promising performances and being popular with fans, the 30-year-old failed to inspire Inter in his 18-month stay at the San Siro.

Previously compared to Andrea Pirlo for his cool head and technique while in possession, Hernanes will be welcomed at Juventus following the departure in the summer of Pirlo and Arturo Vidal, and amid a minor crisis.

With Claudio Marchisio still sidelined through injury, Juve's midfield has been under par in the opening two games but the addition of Hernanes should calm fears among fans.

Lemina's arrival until the end of the season saw Juve's Chilean midfielder Mauricio Isla move the other way.

A club statement said: "A fee of EUR0.5 million paid on or before 30 September 2015 would provide Juventus with the right to purchase the player outright for a price of EUR9.5 million, to be paid in two financial years.

"This fee may increase up to a maximum of EUR1 million should certain sporting targets stipulated in the agreement be achieved during the duration of the player's contract."

According to Juve, Lemina, who celebrates his 22nd birthday on Tuesday, "brings physical strength to Juventus' central areas, solid protection to the backline and an ability to launch attacks with accurate distribution."

Juventus, the league and Cup double winners last season and who were beaten by Barcelona in the Champions League final, have lost their opening two games of the season (Udinese and Roma) for the first time in their history.
