Roma warm up for BATE with Carpi romp

Roma warmed up for their Champions League clash at BATE Borisov with a comprehensive 5-1 win over promoted Carpi on Saturday to move four points behind leaders Inter Milan.

Rudi Garcia's Serie A title challengers began their Group E campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with defending champions Barcelona at the Stadio Olimpico a fortnight ago.

Days before a crucial trip to Belarus, no less than five different Roma players hit the net in a one-sided performance that also saw goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis achieve the rare feat of saving a penalty for the hosts.

Garcia, however, could be made to sweat on the fitness of Francesco Totti, Seydou Keita and Edin Dzeko after all three were forced off with suspected knocks.

"Having three players come off within 55 minutes means it was a costly victory," said Garcia.

Asked details of the injuries, Garcia added: "It's too early to say anything yet, we'll have to take stock tomorrow (Sunday).

"But the atmosphere in the dressing room is positive. The lads know how important it was to start winning again."

Although Roma had taken just a point from their last two games, with only two points from their five previous outings Carpi are struggling to make the grade and it was no different in the Italian capital.

After initially struggling to pierce Carpi's well-packed defence, Roma settled into their game thanks notably to the pace and enterprise of Mohamed Salah and Miralem Pjanic, with Gervinho, perhaps worryingly given the strength of the opposition, enjoying one of his best outings in a Roma shirt for several months.

It took Roma 24 minutes to break the deadlock, but after Kostas Manolas bundled home the rebound from Lucas Digne's strike for his maiden Giallorossi goal, it opened the floodgates.

Pjanic doubled the score on 28 minutes with a superb free kick that crept over the defensive wall and left Zeljko Brkic rooted to the spot.

Gervinho was on hand at the back post for an easy tap-in after Brkic parried Maicon's effort on 31 minutes, the Ivorian remarkably scoring his first league goal since November 30, 2014.

Former Roma striker Marco Borriello has been in fine form for the league newcomers and he reduced arrears three minutes later when he held off Daniele De Rossi to meet a cross from the left and send a header inside De Sanctis's near post.

Totti, who hit his 300th goal for Roma last week in a 2-2 draw with Sassuolo, came off the bench to replace Dzeko at half-time.

However the club talisman, who celebrates his 39th birthday on Sunday, was forced off just six minutes later after tumbling during a two-on-one with Salah, which saw the Egyptian tap home from close range after Brkic had parried Totti's chip.

Carpi were all at sea and Digne added the finishing touches by heading home Maicon's cross at the back post after the Brazilian had been put through on the right by an alert Salah.

Carpi were gifted the chance to reduce arrears late in the match when Antonio Di Gaudio fell easily in the area under a challenge from Maicon.

However De Sanctis easily stopped Ryder Matos's initial effort from the spot, and did even better to stop the rebound from Matos.

Champions Juventus, who Sevilla in Turin on Wednesday, are away to Napoli in Saturday's late game while Inter host Fiorentina in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday.
