Italy's Pirlo out of Azerbaijan clash

Andrea Pirlo has been ruled out of Italy's penultimate Euro 2016 qualifier in Azerbaijan on Saturday after suffering a hamstring injury in training, according to coach Antonio Conte.

New York City FC midfielder Pirlo became the first Major League Soccer (MLS) player to feature for Italy, in a 1-0 win over Malta last month.

But the former Juventus and AC Milan legend could have to wait until next Tuesday's final qualifier, at home to Norway, before playing for Italy again after hurting his hamstring in a challenge during training on Friday.

"He went in to a tackle and made a strange movement, and won't be fit to play," said Conte.

"We hope we'll have him fit in time for Norway."

Pirlo's absence in Baku paves the way for Paris Saint Germain star Marco Verratti to start for the four-time World Cup winners, who can book their ticket to next summer's championships with a win in Azerbaijan or at home to Norway.

Azerbaijan, who sit 12 points adrift of Italy and have no chance of qualifying, held Croatia to a scoreless draw in their last outing at home to take their tally to six points from their last four games.

Norway sit second in Group H, two points behind Italy before hosting Malta, with third-placed Croatia two points further adrift before they host Bulgaria.
