Championship leaders Brighton pegged back at Reading

Brighton maintained their unbeaten start to the Championship season on Saturday but had to settle for a point after Reading fought back to earn a 1-1 draw.

Chris Hughton's leaders looked on course for their ninth league win of the season when Scottish winger Jamie Murphy finished off a slick passing move in the 51st minute.

But former Watford striker Matej Vydra pounced on goalkeeper David Stockdale's error to equalise with 10 minutes remaining, keeping the Royals one place away from the play-offs.

Hughton admitted that Reading had deserved a point.

"On the balance of play today, I think it was a fair result," he said.

"It was an entertaining game and maybe, from our point of view, it was a bit too entertaining at times."

Hull capitalised on Brighton's draw to move within two points of the summit after winning 2-0 at Milton Keynes Dons.

Egypt winger Ahmed Elmohamady opened the scoring with the Tigers' first attack, finishing Abel Hernandez's low cross at the back post.

Substitute Mohamed Diame sealed the points late on with a neat finish from Scotland midfielder Shaun Maloney's through-ball.

Manager Steve Bruce said their recent run of good results was "starting to lift the doom and gloom" following last season's relegation.

Third-placed Burnley raced into 2-0 half-time lead against Huddersfield thanks to striker Andre Gray's brace, the first coming from the penalty spot.

Clarets defender Michael Duff put through his own goal with two minutes remaining, but his team held out to also move within two points of the top.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche paid tribute to match-winner Gray, who joined the club from Brentford in the summer.

"One of the main qualities he's got is I don't think there's a fear of missing and I love that about centre-forwards," he said.

Middlesbrough swept aside struggling Charlton 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium, but were made to wait until the hour-mark before converting their dominance into a goal.

Former England striker David Nugent opened the scoring when he punished defender Chris Solly's weak defensive header before Ghana winger Albert Adomah doubled the advantage six minutes later with a deflected strike.

Spanish defender Daniel Ayala completed the victory with a 78th minute header.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka hailed an "almost perfect" performance, praising his players for maintaining their focus following Wednesday's League Cup win over Manchester United.

Derby also ran out 3-0 winners to keep Rotherham rooted to the foot of the table.

Former Aston Villa forward Andreas Weimann put the Rams ahead after seven minutes and midfielder Jacob Butterfield doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time with a long-range shot.

Defender Richard Keogh's firm drive completed the scoring for Derby, who are now unbeaten in the league since August 29.

Birmingham lost ground on the chasing pack after going down 2-0 in their local derby with Wolves, who earned the bragging rights thanks to an early goal from Wales midfielder Dave Edwards and a late clincher from Liverpool loanee Sheyi Ojo.

In the day's other games, Sheffield Wednesday beat Nottingham Forest 1-0, Fulham thumped Bristol City 4-1 and Ipswich and Cardiff played out a 0-0 draw.

Bolton remain in the relegation zone after a goalless draw at Lancashire rivals Preston.
