West Ham sign young English defender Byram

West Ham United have signed young English right-back Sam Byram from second-tier Leeds United on a four-and-a-half-year contract, the Premier League club announced on Wednesday.

Byram, 22, is reported to have cost West Ham around £3.7 million ($5.2 million, 4.8 million euros).

The versatile player, who can also play on the right side of midfield, joined Leeds at the age of 11 and went on to make over 140 appearances for the club.

"I'm unbelievably proud and happy to join a club as big as this," Byram told the West Ham website. "I'm just looking forward to what the future holds and hopefully I can achieve things with the team going forward."
