Russia bars political slogans at Turkish game after Putin T-shirt row

Russian football club Lokomotiv Moscow on Wednesday warned fans against using political slogans for the Europa League, round of 32, second leg match with Fenerbahce.

UEFA charged Lokomotiv midfielder Dimitri Tarasov for wearing a pro-Putin T-shirt in the 2-0 first leg defeat in Turkey.

"Please abstain from any political slogans or showing any political banners," Lokomotiv said in a warning to fans ahead of the match at the Lokomotiv Stadium on Thursday.

The club stressed that it "fully shares UEFA's zero tolerance of any forms of discrimination and political propaganda."

Russia's interior ministry, which polices matches, also issued a warning to fans not to repeat "contemptible stunts of provocateurs."

Those who do, face "negative consequences both for the offenders and for the club," it said.

Last week after Lokomotiv lost to Fenerbahce in Istanbul, Lokomotiv's Tarasov stripped to a T-shirt showing Russian President Vladimir Putin and a slogan backing Moscow's annexation of Crimea.

His politically charged gesture came as Russia and Turkey are fighting a war of words over Syria following Turkey's downing of a Russian bomber plane at the Syrian border.

UEFA ruled Tarasov broke its ban on wearing clothing with political slogans and he faces a lengthy ban at a hearing next month. Lokomotiv also fined him a reported 300,000 euros ($329,370).

The Putin T-shirt stunt prompted criticism from many Russian officials and sports figures.

However the leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, praised Tarasov and offered to buy him for Chechnya's Terek Grozny or pay off his fine to Lokomotiv.
