Jets sights on play-off spot after Mariners win

Newcastle Jets kept alive their outside hopes of a play-off spot in Australia's A-League with a hard-fought 1-0 derby win over Central Coast Mariners on Sunday.

Steven Ugarkovic scored his first goal for the Jets in their first win in Gosford in more than eight years.

The win puts Newcastle four points behind sixth-placed Sydney FC and a play-off spot with six rounds left.

Western Sydney Wanderers moved three points clear at the top of the competition following their 2-1 home win over in-form Perth Glory.

Super sub Brendon Santalab nabbed the winner with five minutes left of regulation time after Irishman Andy Keogh's penalty had cancelled out Dutchman Romeo Castelen's second goal of the season.

It ended a five-match winning run by Glory and left them two points outside the play-off places.

Adelaide United leapfrogged Brisbane Roar into second spot with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Roar at home.

Spanish coach Guillermo Amor has turned around Adelaide's season fortunes and the Reds are now unbeaten after 13 games.

Kenyan-born youngster Bruce Kamau scored the opener and provided the assist for the Reds' second goal by Bruce Djite before Spanish substitute Pablo Sanchez claimed the third.

Sydney FC fought back to grab a 1-1 draw with Melbourne Victory, playing most of the second half with 10 men after French defender Jacques Faty was red carded.

Victory opened the scoring in the first minute of the second half through Kosta Barbarouses and Faty was sent off just after the hour for bringing down Albanian striker Besart Berisha who was closing in on Sydney's goal.

David Carney claimed a fighting point for the Sky Blues with his strike 15 minutes from time.

Melbourne City lost ground after a 2-1 loss to Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand with the home side scoring both their goals in the opening 15 minutes before star midfielder Aaron Mooy pulled one back.
