CSKA keep slender title lead over Rostov

Five-time champions CSKA Moscow maintained their lead in the Russian Premier League with a 2-0 win over FC Krasnodar in their penultimate match of the season on Monday, but Rostov kept up the pressure by beating Ural 1-0.

The result keeps CSKA two points clear of Rostov at the top of the table ahead of their final game of the campaign at Rubin Kazan on Saturday, when Rostov go to Terek Grozny.

Defending champions Zenit St Petersburg sit third and out of contention after a 1-1 draw with Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday.

CSKA started well and Finnish midfielder Roman Eremenko almost grabbed a seventh-minute opener when he struck the woodwork.

Nigerian forward Ahmed Musa put the hosts ahead in the 17th minute when he received a pinpoint pass by Eremenko and hammered the ball into the corner from long range.

Eremenko added a goal of his own two minutes after the interval, firing the ball into the net past helpless Kranodar keeper Stanislav Kritsyuk, following a mix-up in the visitors' defence.

"We played well in attack and scored twice. Our defence also performed well and managed to hold off Krasnodar's dangerous attack," CSKA coach Leonid Slutsky said.

"But nothing is ended yet. We need to prepare for the deciding match with Rubin Kazan properly. And we're set to do our best for it."

Elsewhere, Rostov dominated their home match with Ural Yekaterinburg from the start, but squandered a hatful of chances.

Iranian international forward Sardar Azmoun scored the winner, heading home Timofei Kalachev's cross with 16 minutes to go to keep his side's title hopes alive.

The win also secured Rostov a place in next season's Champions League third qualifying round.

"We were nervous today and missed too many chances," Rostov head coach Kurban Berdyev said.

"Luckily, we managed to score and win. I believe we deserved this success together with our supporters."

Meanwhile, Spartak Moscow secured their place in next season's Europa League with a 3-0 win over Terek Grozny.

Italian defender Salvatore Bocchetti put Spartak in front in the 33rd minute, when he headed in a free-kick from Dutchman Quincy Promes.

Paraguayan striker Lorenzo Melgarejo and Promes added one apiece in three second-half minutes to seal a comfortable win.

"It's the season's last match in front of our home crowd and I'm happy we managed to make it a special occasion for our fans," Spartak manager Dmitry Alenichev said.

"We won a fourth consecutive match and kept a clean sheet today. I'm very pleased with that."
