Favoured clubs kept apart in CAF Cup draw

CAF Confederation Cup title favourites TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Etoile Sahel of Tunisia were kept apart when the groups draw was made in Cairo Tuesday.

Mazembe, who have won nine CAF competitions, were placed in Group A with Mouloudia Bejaia of Algeria, Young Africans of Tanzania and Medeama of Ghana.

The DR Congo club came closest to winning the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League in 2013, losing the final against CS Sfaxien of Tunisia 3-2 on aggregate.

Defending title-holders Etoile are in an all-North African Group B with FUS Rabat and Kawkab Marrakech of Morocco and Al Ahly Tripoli of Libya.

Etoile, who have also won nine CAF competitions, are chasing a record-equalling third Confederation Cup title.

They edged FAR Rabat of Morocco on away goals in the 2006 final and beat Orlando Pirates of South Africa 2-1 on aggregate last year to regain the trophy.

FUS won the second-tier African competition in 2010 with a shock 3-2 away win over Sfaxien after being held 0-0 at home in the first leg of the final.

Bejaia, Young Africans, Medeama, Marrakech and Ahly are Confedetation Cup group-phase debutants.

Group winners and runners-up after the double-round mini-leagues qualify for the semi-finals.
