Bayern's opening Bremen rout concerns Bundesliga boss

Reinhard Rauball, president of the German Football League (DFL), admits Bayern Munich's trashing of Werder Bremen to kick-off the 2016/17 season was not a good advertisement for the Bundesliga.

"Bayern played some very good football, but I was shocked by the how little resistance Werder Bremen offered," Rauball told German radio on Saturday.

Robert Lewandowski netted a hat-trick on Friday at Munich's Allianz Arena as defending champions Bayern routed hapless Werder 6-0, battering the Bremen goal with 24 shots.

At the other end, Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had just four saves to make for the hosts as the Bremen defence collapsed.

Bayern's domination of the Bundesliga title for the last four seasons shows no signs of weakening as Carlo Ancelotti has replaced Pep Guardiola as head coach.

The game was televised live in 210 countries, but despite the flurry of goals, Rauball says the match did little to sell Germany's top flight overseas.

"No one can argue that the match was on a knife edge, but I hope the millions of viewers were pleased with the goals and can take that as some compensation."

Bayern also trounced Hamburg 5-0 in the opening game of the 2015/16 season, leaving Rauball pondering how the DFL can make the season opener in Germany's top flight less of a one-sided affair.

Traditionally, the defending German champions kick-off the new season at home, but Rauball was left wondering whether to tinker with the format.

But he said he would not consider letting Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, Germany's top two teams in recent years, meet in the first league game of next season.

"Already during (Friday's) match, I was left thinking: who comes into question for next season's opening match?," admitted Rauball after the start of the 54th Bundesliga season.

"But you don't play the highlight of the season, like when the top team plays the second best, as the opening match. No other league would do that."
