Five key matches on Bayern's way to league title

Bayern Munich were crowned German league winners on Saturday, their fifth Bundesliga title in a row.

Here are five key matches on their path to the title:

Bayern Munich 6 (Alonso 9, Lewandowski 13, 46, 77-pen, Lahm 66, Ribery 73) Werder Bremen 0

Matchday one, August 26, 2016

Robert Lewandowski hit a hat-trick as Bayern brushed Werder aside to ensure the defending champions finished the opening weekend of the 2016/17 season top of the table.

Xabi Alonso scored the first goal of the season in Germany and Lewandowski netted either side of the break before captain Philipp Lahm added a fourth.

It was shooting practice by the time Franck Ribery scored before Lewandowski converted a late penalty to claim the first of his three Bundesliga hat-tricks this season.

Borussia Dortmund 1 (Aubameyang 11) Bayern Munich 0

Matchday 11, November 19, 2016

Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slotted the winning goal after just 11 minutes for the hosts as Bayern's away defeat saw RB Leipzig knock them off top spot.

Mario Goetze, back in a Dortmund shirt after three unhappy years with Bayern, provided the cross which Aubameyang buried to ignite talk of a title race.

Carlo Ancelotti tasted defeat for the first time in the Bundesliga.

Leipzig stayed top of the table for three weeks until their shock 1-0 defeat at Ingolstadt on December 10 allowed Bayern to regain first place on goal difference.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge sent a carload of "Weisswurst" sausages to neighbours Ingolstadt by way of a thank you.

Leipzig and Bayern were neck-and-neck on 36 points until...

Bayern Munich 3 (Thiago 17, Xabi Alonso 25, Lewandowski 45-pen) RB Leipzig 0

Matchday 16, December 21, 2016

The match billed as the Bundesliga's pre-Christmas showdown was settled by half-time as Bayern flew out of the blocks and floored 10-man Leipzig.

Thiago Alcantara and Xabi Alonso netted goals mid-way through the first half in a devastating eight-minute spell.

Leipzig's chances took a further hit after play-maker Emil Forsberg's sending off on 30 minutes after his mistimed tackle caught Philipp Lahm on the back of the ankle.

When Douglas Costa was fouled in the area, Lewandowski stepped up to convert the penalty on the stroke of half time as Bayern left no doubt who was top dog in Germany once more.

Ingolstadt 0 Bayern Munich 2 (Vidal 90, Robben 90+1)

Matchday 20, February 11, 2017

With 90 minutes up Bayern were being held to a goalless draw by second-from-bottom Ingolstadt when Arturo Vidal and Arjen Robben struck twice in a minute.

Vidal fired home from a cross and Robben netted seconds later to snatch the three points just before the final whistle.

Bayern started the match only four points clear of Leipzig.

But the win at Ingolstadt effectively ended the title race as all six teams immediately behind Bayern in the table all lost that weekend leaving Munich seven points clear.

Bayern Munich 4 (Ribery 4, Lewandowski 10, 68-pen, Robben 49) Borussia Dortmund 1 (Guerreiro 20)

Matchday 28, April 8, 2017

Just as they did in December at home to Leipzig, Bayern ran riot against Dortmund, racing into a 2-0 lead with just 10 minutes on the clock.

Ribery slotted home a Lahm cross and Lewandowski slammed home a free-kick to leave Dortmund reeling.

Raphael Guerreiro gave the visitors brief hope with a goal on 20 minutes, but Robben added Bayern's third just after the break before Lewandowski converted a penalty.

The win maintained Bayern's 10-point lead and it was simply a matter of time before their fifth-straight title was confirmed.
