Karsdorp's Roma career begins with knee op

Dutch international defender Rick Karsdorp is to undergo knee surgery just days after signing for the Serie A runners-up Roma.

Karsdorp, who helped Feyenoord end their 18-year wait for the Dutch league title last season, joined Eusebio Di Francesco's side on Wednesday in a five-year deal worth 14 million euros ($15.9 million).

Two days later, Roma announced the 22-year-old's first move at the club would be to undergo keyhole surgery on a troublesome knee.

A statement from Roma on Friday said: "Prior to his signing the Netherlands international underwent an extensive medical, which included an assessment and investigation of a knee complaint the player picked up towards the end of the 2016-17 season.

"In consultation with renowned surgeon Dr. Mariani, following the evaluation the player and Roma's medical staff agreed that minor surgery - scheduled for Monday - was the sensible course of action."

Speaking to Roma radio, Roma team doctor Riccardo Vescovo said: "On Monday, Dr Mariani will perform arthroscopic surgery on Rick Karsdorp's right knee.

"We're doing this because we want to take a closer look at his lateral meniscus after his medical - which was conducted in tandem with Dr. Andrea Causarano - revealed findings that called for further investigation.

"It's nothing serious or alarming; the knee is completely normal in terms of the cartilage and ligaments."

Karsdorp signed his contract on Wednesday and said: "Joining Roma is a great move for me.

"I come here with plenty of enthusiasm to play and to hopefully achieve my dreams. I know I have lots of room for improvement but I can't wait to play for this historic club."

Roma, who finished just four points behind Juventus, have secured an automatic spot in next season's Champions League and are hoping to strengthen for a fresh assault on the competition after their failure to qualify for the group stages last term.
