Cameroonian 'keeper slots penalty to end SuperSport reign

Cameroonian goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb saved a penalty and scored the tie-deciding one Sunday as Bloemfontein Celtic ended the two-season reign of SuperSport United as South African FA Cup holders.

He blocked the third United spot-kick from Denwin Farmer before converting the penalty that gave Celtic a 5-4 shootout triumph after a 1-1 draw following extra time.

Ndumiso Mabena gave Celtic a 36th-minute lead from a penalty and Sipho Mbule levelled 13 minutes into the second half.

Victory in the last-32 tie was particularly satisfying for the Bloemfontein outfit after a 4-2 league hammering at SuperSport last weekend.

Celtic also knocked SuperSport out of the League Cup this season in another tie that went to penalties.

"We concentrated a lot on penalties during training sessions this week," said man-of-the-match award winner Tignyemb.

"I faced a lot of them and also took quite a few so we were well prepared and extremely confident when the match went to a shootout."

While Celtic scraped through, Kaizer Chiefs romped to a 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows in Soweto in another tie between top flight clubs.

Ryan Moon broke the stalemate soon after half-time and late goals from Bernard Parker and Joseph Molangoane wrapped up an easier-than-expected success.

Lower-league outfits Eastern Cape Bees and Royal Eagles are also through to the last-16 stage of the 20 million rand (about $1.7 million/1.35 million euro) competition.

Both achieved away victories with Eagles edging Happy Wanderers 1-0 and Bees stinging Mariveni United 3-1.
