CSKA leapfrog Spartak into Champions League

Russian champions Lokomotiv Moscow suffered a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal Tula on Sunday as their city rivals CSKA ended the Premier League season on a massive high.

Lokomotiv finished eight points clear of second-placed CSKA, who leapfrogged Moscow rivals Spartak with a 2-1 win over Anzhi to clinch automatic Champions League qualification.

Spartak, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Dynamo, will go into the third round of Champions League qualifying next season.

"Today Arsenal were the better side and won deservedly," Lokomotiv head coach Yury Syomin said. "They looked the more motivated side and that made the difference."

Lokomotiv were trailing 1-0 after Arsenal striker Artem Dzyuba, on loan from Zenit, netted the opener just before the half-hour by redirecting a cross from Mikhail Aleksandrov from the right flank into the net.

Kantemir Berkhamov added his goal in injury time to secure the hosts a well-deserved win.

Elsewhere, CSKA Nigerian striker Ahmed Musa opened the score in the ninth minute sending the ball into the net from the edge of the six-yard box off a pinpoint pass by Kirill Nababkin.

Anzhi, who needed points to avoid the relegation, replied positively and their midfielder Arsen Khubulov pulled to level in the 33rd minute with a powerful freekick from the edge of the area.

But Brazilian Vitinho netted the Red Army side's winning goal right after the hour mark with low shot from 25 yards out.

Massimo Carrera's Spartak dominated the play and possession from the kick-off but it was Dynamo's striker Yevgeny Lutsenko who opened the score with a spotkick in the 35th minute after Ilya Kutepov fouled Vladimir Rykov in the area.

Spartak poured in attack seeking for an equaliser but Dynamo defended stoutly replying on the counter-attacks and kept their narrow lead through.

"It's a pity that we've lost the derby," Carrera said. "But today Dynamo were more hungry and with a strong desire to win.

"But we still have a chance to make it into the Champions League group stage. We need to look forward and to think about new objectives in the next season."

Hot favourite to take over the Italian national team Roberto Mancini has reached an exit agreement with Zenit St Petersburg, who claimed a resounding 6-0 win over already relegated SKA Khabarovsk in his last match at the helm.

Sebastian Driussi put Zenit into the lead in the sixth minute when he received skipper Domenico Criscito pass into the area and hammered the ball in with a powerful volley shot.

Forward Anton Zabolotny and midfielder Alexander Erokhin then added one apiece to give Zenit a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

After the interval an unstoppable Erokhin scored three more to complete the rout.

"It always leaves the feeling of resentment when you fail to win the championship which we've started so good," Mancini said.

"We could have won this championship but unfortunately we missed our chances to do that. That's why I leave Saint Petersburg in a bad mood."
