Protesting Greek football referees call off strike

Greek Super League referees announced Friday that they are ending their strike protesting an attack on one of their colleagues last month.

The move came after a meeting representatives of the referees held with government officials, the Greek federation and the league in which the referees received assurances for their safety.

The Greek Cup matches will resume on January 8 and the Super League on January 12 after weekend matches were twice postponed.

On December 21, the referees had announced an indefinite strike "as a minimum sign of sympathy for our worthy colleague who suffered a cowardly attacked."

Thanasi Tzilos, who has recently earned his FIFA badge, was attacked by four hooded assailants on December 20 as he left his home in the central Greek town of Larissa.

He received stitches for head and leg injuries.

The culprits have not been found by police.

Ten days before the attack 33-year-old Tzilos had officiated the Xanthi-Olympiakos match which ended 1-1.

According to Greek website sport24.gr there have been 33 attacks or threats to referees in the country since 2009.
